What would you consider to be "true" American musical forms of the 20th century?

American is indebted to the American *****, for he is the only one that has produced authentic American music, namely jazz and hip-hop. Along with that you have all the other offshoots, soul, gospel, blues, etc. Every other form of music has is an import from the British (rock, punk) or from Europe in general (opera, electronic). In fact, arguably, much of rock and roll owes a great deal of its existence to jazz and early blues music itself. Therefore, if anyone wants to be more American, they should listen to the likes of Miles Davis and Tupac. I have left country out of this lineup, not because I don't consider country to be truly American, it is for the most part... I just don't regard country as music. What do you think?

Country is music. I'm not a huge fan of it, but it is music. I would much prefer to listen to some jazz or classical. What i don't understand how people can say rap is music.

I don't know if I'd necessarily agree that rock music came from Europe. It's a bastard stepchild of jazz and blues.

But yes - jazz, blues - they are the American Music that started in America instead of being imported.

Also, there are several American Composers (Glass, Reich, Ives) that created a musical vocabulary that was very different from their European counterparts.

Good question.

FP
I generally agree with you. I'd throw in tin pan alley/great American song book material and the classic American musicals too--Rogers %26amp; Hammerstein et. al.
i think that you answered your own question...but i believe that classic rock tops all on my list of endlist favorites. the plethera of music made in the 20th century, started from country and/(and mabey)or african spirituals. this being so, rock music in general originated from these.
Rock came from African Americans; rock and roll was slang for sex. The original 'rockers' were black too, the most famous were Little Richard and James Brown and the like. True American music would be Country, Jazzy, Blue-Grass, Folk, and Rock because were a products of the other. All these music genres have 'rhythm'

Hip hop came from Reggae, its more Jamaican than American and became popular in the East Coast-because of strong Jamaican ties.

There are no distinct American styles of music except maybe one i'll get into later..now for my rant..

ALL music styles eminate from another hip-hop came forth from r%26amp;b which was inspired by the blues and jazz which was inspired by ragtime and folk music which came from the rowdier types of gospel music folk music came from bluegrass and regional styles in the US which came from various European, African and Asian stylings.

Country derived from gospel and bluegrass. Bluegrass derived from Celtic music which derived from various forms of music played even back to the Middle Ages.

To say that country is not music is not being open minded as all music is by definition music no matter what you're particular tastes are.

There's no music that's crap there's just what you like and don't like.

The only TRUE American Music is the music of the indigenous peoples of North America such as Native American chant and drums which came from Ancient Asia with them across the Bering Strait. Ever hear "Return To Innocence" by Enigma? The chanting that sounds like Native American chanting is actually done by a indigenous people near Korea called the Anu.
Listen to whatever you dig

Music is music its the truth it speaks to the soul.

I'd say just because you don't like a style or can't pick up on

it don't disregard as not being music.

Everyone has their own taste,

i listen to a lot of people it expands my mind

give me more things to make my music and style with.

I listen to Jimi Hendrix to Tupac

Muddy Waters to Mozart.

To me there is no such thing as bad music,

just music that im not interested in.

Music can originate from many things

if you've ever stopped you hear music

in the places you least expect.

Basically music can originate

from anywhere
