I'm looking for certain types of orchestral and classical music.?

I want to listen to something turbulent, visceral and menacing with a sense of distress and seriousness. Not that la-de-da-de-da bubbly stuff (not the best way to describe it, I know). Google is terrible for this kind of thing, anyone know of any orchestras or musical groups where this type of music is displayed? Opera is fine too.

The first song that came to my mind was "Mars -

the Bringer of War" by Gustav Holst. I hope that could be a beginning for you.
um...how about:

Also Sprach Zarathustra, OP. 30-Introduction

Die Valkure-Ride of the Valkyries

Carmina Burana #1-O Fortuna

Rhapsody in Blue
John Williams, Hans Zimmer, some Shostakovich.
Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky

Dance of the Nights by Prokofiev

Beethoven's Fifth Symphony

Flight of the Valkyries by Wagner

O Fortuna from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff

All these can be seen on youtube.
Try Beethoven. His stuff wasn't happy/bubbly. His song Fur Elise was written to one of his students who he fell in love with but she married someone else. : (
Although its resolution is a "redemptive" one, getting there is about as turbulent and distressful as you can get: "The Immolation" scene from R. Wagner's "Die Gotterdammerung". The house literally falls down in this one, but its some of the most beautiful, most grand music ever written: either with the original vocal version, or orchestra only.

Another candidate from the same composer: the 3rd scene of "Das Rheingold". In the best recorded performance of it that I've ever heard - the Solti with Vienna Phil. - the piteous wailings of the enslaved Nibelungs, coupled with the music of the dragons appearance, will be more than you can ask for.

Samuel Barber's: "Adagio for Strings": this may not be what you're looking for, but it is the most profoundly "sad" music I've ever heard.

Two more from Jean Sibelius's: the 4th and 7th symphonies; in some ways, enigmatic, but in others, deeply brooding and spiritually questioning. The best recordings - don't even know if they are still available - von Karajan and the New Philharmonia(very old recording).

Enjoy?

Start here:

Stravinsky - Rite of Spring

Then check out the other suggestions posted above.

Then come back and check out anything by Christopher Rouse. Joesph Schwantner might be to your liking, too.
